SLA · Stereolithography

Stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid resin layer by layer with a UV laser: parts with a smooth surface, fine detail and tight tolerances that FDM cannot reach — on the Formlabs Form 4, one of the most precise resin machines on the market.

Knowing whether SLA 3D printing is the right choice

Precision and fine detail

SLA layers go down to 25 microns. Ideal for complex geometries, fine threads, small components or parts that must fit together precisely.

Surface finish

Near-smooth surface straight off the machine, without the visible deposition lines of FDM. Ideal for parts that will be painted, moulded or presented without heavy post-processing.

Specialised technical resins

High temperature, impact resistance, ESD, elastomer, castable — the Formlabs Form 4 catalogue covers requirements that most SLA providers cannot address.

Applications and use cases

High-fidelity functional prototypes

Validate a complex geometry, test a precise assembly, present a mock-up before industrialisation. SLA produces parts close to the final result from the very first print.

Exemple : electronic enclosure with clip guides and fine ribs, dimensionally validated before ordering injection tooling.

Medical parts and anatomical models

Surgical simulation, training devices, planning models. The precision and surface finish of SLA are essential for these applications.

Exemple : high-fidelity anatomical model for procedure preparation, 50-micron resolution.

Tooling and production jigs

Dimensional inspection jigs, assembly tools, fixtures. SLA produces rigid, precise parts that withstand repeated use in production.

Exemple : drilling jig in rigid resin for an assembly line, ±0.1 mm tolerance maintained over 500 cycles.

High-temperature parts

With Formlabs High Temp resin (HDT 238 °C at 0.45 MPa) — thermoforming moulds, parts near heat sources, real-condition testing. Capacity available — contact us for a feasibility study.

ESD parts and electronic components

Formlabs ESD resin dissipates electrostatic charges — enclosures for sensitive components, PCB handling jigs, electronics production environments. Capacity available — contact us for a feasibility study.

Casting and foundry (castable)

Formlabs Castable Wax resin burns out cleanly for lost-wax casting — jewellery, industrial foundry parts, metal prototypes without machining. Capacity available — contact us for a feasibility study.

The resins we use — and what they make possible

Formlabs Form 4 resins. The resin choice depends on the real use of the part, not on the catalogue.
