Understanding the need: the starting point

1

The request

Produce cut and engraved cards for an awareness campaign, within an already well-tested collaborative framework. As part of a partnership between Toupie Shop and the artist Reflets Oniriques, an awareness campaign was set up around spinning tops designed to help decide who does not drink and drives everyone home. To support this initiative, wooden cards featuring a detachable spinning top and engraved instructions had to be produced in a run, then distributed through the Toupie Shop store as well as in certain partner bars. Used to working with us on artistic projects requiring precision and consistency, Reflets Oniriques naturally entrusted us with the laser cutting and engraving of these cards, with particular attention paid to faithfully respecting the artwork and text, as well as to a deliberately tight deadline.

The need

Securing a smooth, precise and reliable production within a tight deadline. Behind the manufacturing request, several concrete needs were identified:

  • Ensure consistent cutting and engraving, so that each card is strictly identical and usable without any adjustment.
  • Ease the artist's manual work by delivering pieces ready to assemble.
  • Meet a tight deadline, set by the schedule of the awareness campaign.
  • Get ahead on delivery, wherever possible, to secure the launch of the operation.
  • Take care over the experience on receipt, in keeping with the human, committed dimension of the project.

Our objective

Producing a run of cards faithful to the artwork, reliable over time and delivered on schedule. At Osmoz 3D, our goal was to put our expertise at the service of a project that is both artistic and committed, guaranteeing a frictionless execution for the artist. In concrete terms, this meant:

  • faithfully translating the files supplied, without altering the artwork or the text,
  • ensuring consistent quality across all 120 cards produced,
  • meeting, and if possible beating, the announced deadline,
  • delivering pieces ready to use, with no rework required,
  • contributing to a coherent overall experience, from manufacturing through to receipt.

The highlights of the project

1

Preparing the materials and securing the files

Laying a reliable foundation before starting production. The first step was to prepare the wooden materials and check the files supplied. Being used to working together, the exchanges were smooth: the files were clear, well structured and immediately usable for laser cutting and engraving. This phase nonetheless allowed us to confirm several essential points:

  • the good legibility of the engraved text,
  • the precise respect of the artwork designed by the artist,
  • the consistency between the card format, the detachable circle and the piece intended to form the spinning top.

Batch laser cutting and engraving

Combining precision, consistency and respect for the project's pace. Once the materials were prepared and the files validated, production of the cards could begin. The project covered a run of 120 rectangular cards, featuring a detachable circle intended to hold a small piece forming the spinning top, together with instructions engraved directly onto the card. The laser cutting and engraving were carried out with particular attention paid to:

  • the precision of the cuts, so that the circle detaches easily without weakening the card,
  • the legibility and fineness of the engravings, essential to convey the awareness message clearly,
  • the consistency of the finish across the whole run, to guarantee perfect uniformity.

Quality control and preparation for dispatch

Guaranteeing a run that is compliant and ready to use. Before dispatch, each card underwent a careful inspection. The aim was to make sure that all the pieces met the expected requirements for precision and consistency, both in cutting and in engraving. This step allowed us to:

  • check the sharpness of the engravings and their perfect legibility,
  • verify how easily the circle detaches without damaging the card,
  • ensure the uniformity of the run across all 120 copies.

Conclusion

A consistent run for a good cause

120 cards engraved and cut with the same precision, within the deadlines of an awareness campaign. Laser cutting excels on small runs where consistency counts.
