Understanding the STL format

STL is the most common format in 3D printing: it represents geometry using triangles. The more triangles there are, the more precise it is — but the heavier the file. It carries neither colour nor texture, hence its simplicity and universal compatibility.

Preparing an STL file

  • Check the model is watertight (no holes)
  • Orient surfaces correctly, make the mesh uniform
  • Adjust resolution, layer height and supports during slicing (Cura, Simplify3D)

Tools such as Meshmixer, Netfabb or a CAD package help analyse and optimise the mesh.

Repairing an STL file

Common problems: mesh holes, inverted surfaces, intersections, geometry errors. Specialised software (Netfabb, Meshmixer, 3D Builder) detects and corrects them — automatically, or by hand for complex cases.

Creating or downloading a model

To create: TinkerCAD and SketchUp for beginners, Blender, Fusion 360 or SolidWorks to go further. When exporting, aim for a balanced resolution (neither too low nor too heavy). To download: Thingiverse, MakerWorld, Cults 3D — checking dimensions, complexity and mesh quality.
